Chapter Eight

Dani had an idea.

A way to walk the line between betraying her brother and betraying Bootlace’s people.

It was a bad idea. Terrible really, but maybe it could work. Maybe she could make everyone happy and still earn the protection Zeke had promised.

The motel bed creaked under her as she rolled over to pick up her phone from the nightstand. There was a slew of messages from Zeke, but she didn’t feel like reading them. This was just a quick text before she could change her mind.

She’d learned so, sooooo much tonight about Bootlace’s people.

I’m back in. Send.

She stared at the glowing screen as the typing dots showed up that said her brother was still awake and had been waiting for her to check-in. She wanted to lay here in the dark and mull over everything she’d seen and felt today, and then fall asleep, but she had business to take care of first.

What can you tell me? How many are there? Where are they living? Are they spread out? Is Rupert still Alpha?

I’ll answer all of that but first, I have a favor to ask. Send.

A full thirty seconds passed before she saw the typing dots. Your favor is clearing territory in Alaska. That was the deal.

God, her brother had grown up to be an asshole. Everything had to be a negotiation with him now, but she supposed that’s how he’d climbed the ranks to Alpha in the Piston Mountain Pack.

Her phone buzzed with his call, and she answered. “That’s not a favor, Zeke. I’m risking my life to find out information for you.”

“And I would be risking my entire Pack to clear territory in Alaska for you. You sent me some cryptic message about how you can’t do this anymore, with no explanation, and then you go all day without answering my calls or responding to my messages. You were plan A, Dani. There is a plan B.”

“Oh yeah? Just come in here guns a-blazing and fight them like the Rye Valley Pack did? Like the Landover Pack, and the Ruger Pack, and the Leader Canyon Pack, and the Twisted Oak Pack? You’re all doing this wrong!”

“Yeah, then what’s the right way?” Zeke yelled into the phone.

She clenched and unclenched her fist, gave herself a few moments to settle her wolf from wanting to leap through this damn phone and mangle him. “You said you have someone in your Pack who can track down information, right?”

“Yeah. He’s a hacker. Kind of. His name is Reaper. He’s hit a dead end with the Trader Pack though.”

“They go by the Stryker Pack now. No use calling them the Trader Pack anymore. That Pack is dead and gone, and you wouldn’t recognize what it’s become.”

“Reaper can’t help you. All he’s found are the paper trails for their houses back when they had established territory under Nathaniel Tellings. Credit card purchases, but it all checked out normal. Groceries and shit. He found the sales slips for the RVs they’re probably shacked up in right now, but they’re all under one name.
